The question comes up in almost every consulting call: is a TrueNAS Mini X+ enough, or does it have to be a rack system from the R-Series straight away? The honest answer does not live on the datasheet. It depends on three things: team size, workload, and where the storage will actually stand. This article sorts TrueNAS Mini X Plus vs R through real-world cases and shows when each series makes sense - and when it does not.

TrueNAS model choice: pick the location first, then the model

Before we compare models, look at the physical situation. A server room with a 19-inch rack, UPS, cooling and a dedicated uplink offers very different options than a small office with a closed network cabinet next to the copier.

  • Edge or branch site without a rack: a tower or compact system usually fits better than 19-inch. Noise, heat and power draw often matter more than the datasheet.
  • Central server room: 19-inch is the standard. Rack storage is easy to cable, integrate into the UPS, and feed into existing monitoring.
  • Colocation data center: if every rack unit is billed, density becomes a hard criterion. A 1U system with many disks saves rent compared to a 4U tower plus adapter workaround.

Once you know the physical setup, half of the model choice is already made. The rest is workload.

TrueNAS Mini X+ buyer’s guide: who the small one really fits

The TrueNAS Mini X+ is the compact system in the portfolio: tower form factor, moderate power draw, 10 GbE uplinks, ZFS with ECC RAM. Current configurations live on the product page at /en/truenas/mini/.

Typical scenarios for the Mini X+

  • Small team, single site: five to fifteen users, classic file shares, SMB with Active Directory, some Time Machine, occasionally a container for a small application. The Mini X+ has enough headroom for that.
  • Edge site of a larger environment: branch offices, factory floor, remote sites. The Mini X+ serves as a local file and cache node, replicates snapshots to a rack system at headquarters and survives WAN outages.
  • Dedicated backup head at a second site: if you follow the 3-2-1 backup rule, you need a copy off-site. The Mini X+ is a clean, low-maintenance landing spot for that copy.
  • Home lab and test environment with enterprise feel: ZFS, snapshots, replication, real ECC. Anyone learning TrueNAS gets a system that can later run in production for a small team.

Where the Mini X+ runs out of headroom

  • Beyond roughly 20 concurrent users on heavy file workloads.
  • As primary VM storage for a Proxmox cluster with more than a handful of production VMs.
  • Databases with sustained high random write pressure.
  • Capacity requirements well beyond about 100 TB raw, or clear growth plans in that direction.

That is where the R-Series starts to play to its strengths.

TrueNAS R-Series buyer’s guide: R20, R40, R60 compared

The R-Series is the 1U and 2U rack standard. The models differ less in principle than in density, slot count and capacity focus. Overview and detail pages at /en/truenas/r-serie/.

R20 as the 1U all-rounder for SMB

The R20 is the classic choice when a rack needs a clean storage box for general file services, moderate virtualization and backup targets. In 1U with a balanced number of bays, it fits into almost any existing SMB rack without stressing the cooling. Anyone still running an old Windows file server or an aging NAS with SMB shares finds an obvious successor here, complete with ZFS snapshots, replication and proper networking.

Typical roles:

  • Primary storage for file services in an SMB with 20 to 150 users.
  • Repository for Veeam, Proxmox Backup Server or Bareos.

R40 as the 2U standard with more headroom

The R40 is the 2U model with noticeably more bays, more RAM options and more room to grow. It is the right pick when a site is expected to expand over several years and it is already visible today that the R20 will hit its ceiling within 24 months.

Real-world roles:

  • Central storage for a Proxmox cluster with a meaningful VM count.
  • Combined primary storage and backup head, if both roles stay properly separated - separate pools, separate networks.
  • Storage for mixed profiles: file services plus a few databases plus a VM repository.

R60 as the capacity-oriented data center model

The R60 is built for density: many slots in 1U, modern PCIe connectivity, plenty of network. It is the answer when a data center has to consolidate large volumes and every rack unit counts. Architecture details are covered in TrueNAS R60: NVMe storage for AI and HPC.

The R60 makes sense when:

  • Capacity, not price per slot, is the deciding factor.
  • 25/100 GbE is actually present in the environment and the bandwidth is actually consumed.
  • A single system is meant to replace larger parts of an existing storage zoo.

For typical SMB sizes the R60 is usually oversized. If you only have a few terabytes of office data, R20 or Mini X+ are the better fit.

When Mini X+, when R-Series: the decision guide

A simple guide we use in consulting sessions:

  1. No rack, fewer than 20 users, less than 50 TB net, modest growth? Mini X+.
  2. Rack in place, SMB size, classic file and backup roles? R20.
  3. Rack in place, larger cluster, multi-year growth, mixed workloads? R40.
  4. Data center, consolidation, high capacity in few rack units? R60.
  5. Distributed sites? Headquarters on R-Series, branches on Mini X+, snapshot replication in between.

For the details - how much RAM, how many disks, which network - the TrueNAS configurator is a much better tool than endless spreadsheets. It forces clear decisions on pool layout and networking and produces a configuration we can validate together.

What often gets missed in the model choice

Networking is the most common planning mistake

A Mini X+ with a 10 GbE uplink hanging off a 1 GbE switch is effectively a 1 GbE NAS. An R40 on a saturated LAG trunk is not much better. Networking belongs in the budget from day one, including switch ports, SFP+ modules and cabling. If virtualization over iSCSI or NFS is on the roadmap, keep storage and client networks strictly separate.

Snapshots and replication belong in the concept

Snapshots are not a backup. They complement one. Anyone choosing Mini X+ or R-Series should plan the replication target in the same step - often a Mini X+ at a second site or a smaller R-Series in another fire zone. Background in Benefits of TrueNAS snapshots.

M-Series is scaled back

If you were looking for M50 or M60: those are no longer our current recommendation. When explicit dual-controller HA is genuinely required, we discuss it individually in an IT consulting session. For most SMB cases the R-Series plus a clean snapshot and replication concept delivers the better value.

Plan growth honestly

“We are not growing any more” is a common line. Twelve months later a new video surveillance server appears in the server room, marketing has started a 4K production, and accounting archives everything digitally. Two sizes too small ends up more expensive than one size too big, because a swap-out within 18 months always costs more than a properly sized first install.

Prices, support and what “on request” means

We deliberately avoid fixed euro figures in comparison articles. Hardware and module prices move, exchange rates, NICs and disk choices push a system into a four-digit swing per box very quickly. For a reliable number: a short requirements intake, one or two configurator rounds, then a concrete quote including the matching support level. FAQ on TrueNAS Mini X+ vs. R-Series

Can a TrueNAS Mini X+ serve an entire Proxmox cluster?

For lab clusters or very small production environments with a handful of VMs, yes. As soon as real databases, terminal servers or many VMs land on the storage, an R-Series is the more robust choice - mostly because of networking and expandability.

R20 or R40 - what is the SMB standard?

For typical SMB sizes with clear roles and moderate growth, the R20 in 1U is often the right pick. If you can see that within two to three years you will need significantly more capacity, more VMs or several pools, the jump to R40 pays off.

Does the R60 make sense for SMB?

Rarely. The R60 targets density and capacity in the data center. If an SMB grows into very high capacity or has to save rack units in colocation, it can fit. In most cases an R40 with a clean pool concept is the more economical answer.

Why no M50 or M60 any more?

The M50 and M60 are no longer our current recommendation. For genuine HA requirements we discuss the case individually. Most SMB scenarios today are solved with R-Series plus replication.

How do we get to a reliable configuration fast?

Gather the boundary conditions first: users, workloads, target capacity, network, sites. Feed those into the TrueNAS configurator, build a first variant, then sharpen it together. Two short iterations are usually enough to land on a solid base.
