Proxmox Enterprise Premium Support goes 24/7 global today: what the new 2-hour SLA means for mid-market IT in practice

Proxmox has published a piece of news today, 19 October 2026, that is strategically relevant for productive Proxmox environments in the mid-market: Enterprise Premium Support is from now on available 24 hours around the world, with a guaranteed first response time of two hours for Severity 1 cases. The extension applies to all existing and new Premium subscriptions for Proxmox Virtual Environment, Proxmox Backup Server and Proxmox Datacenter Manager.

For operators of Proxmox clusters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, this is a real step forward. Direct vendor support used to end on Friday afternoon Central European Time — weekend and night incidents had to be bridged through partners like DATAZONE until Monday, when Proxmox engineering in Vienna was reachable again. With the 24/7 extension, the rules of the game change. A short take on what is practically new, where the limits of the new support sit and when the Premium upgrade is actually worth it in the mid-market.

What Proxmox announced today

The announcement from Vienna is four lines long, but every one of them counts:

  • 24/7 global support including weekends and holidays — not just CET business hours
  • Guaranteed first response in two hours for critical cases (Severity 1)
  • Unlimited support tickets across the entire subscription period
  • Direct access to Proxmox expertise — vendor support, not just partner

All of that is included in the existing Premium subscription. So there is no price increase, no upsell to a new “Premium Plus” tier and no additional packages to buy on top. Anyone who already holds a Proxmox Enterprise Premium subscription today gets the extension automatically.

With this, the vendor moves closer on the support side to what other enterprise virtualisation vendors like VMware or Nutanix have been offering for years — with the decisive difference that Proxmox subscriptions are not billed per core, but per CPU socket per year. The cost side remains the familiarly moderate one.

What Proxmox Premium Support includes — and what it does not

Proxmox offers three enterprise support levels for VE: Basic, Standard and Premium. Comparable tiers apply to PBS and PDM. The concrete difference lies in two dimensions:

What Premium brings on top of Standard:

  • Highest priority in the ticket queue
  • First response now 24/7 instead of business hours only
  • Unlimited tickets instead of a quota
  • Access to the Enterprise repository (true for all three levels)
  • Participation in early beta programmes on request

What even Premium does not deliver — honestly:

  • No on-site service. Proxmox works remotely via online ticket, email and screenshare when needed.
  • No responsibility for the hardware. Server RMA runs through the hardware vendor.
  • No operational handover or management. That is the role of the local IT partner.
  • No adaptations to customer-specific software or non-standard configurations above a Linux-Debian baseline.

For mid-market environments this means in practice: Premium solves the problem of “vendor expertise reachable” also at night; the problem of “someone is on site and gets hands on the system” Premium does not solve. That second part remains the job of the IT provider.

Why the 24/7 extension matters strategically

That Proxmox pulls support round the clock has three reasons that run together:

1. The VMware exodus continues. Since the Broadcom takeover at the end of 2023, more and more DACH companies have migrated to Proxmox — our own experience from migration projects confirms that. Many of these customers come from environments with 24/7 vendor support and expect the same level from the successor.

2. Production SLA without 24/7 vendor support is a gap. Anyone who commits to a production virtualisation stack with 99.9 % availability has to be able to reach vendor expertise at night in a P1 case. The old answer was: bridge through the partner until Monday if needed. For critical cases that was borderline.

3. Enterprise requirements on PBS and PDM are rising. Backup server and datacenter manager increasingly sit at the heart of business-critical processes. Data loss or a stuck multi-cluster management at 02:00 is no longer just a Vienna office-hours problem.

The extension is therefore not a PR move but a necessary alignment of the offering with the current reality of the enterprise market.

When Premium is worth it in DACH mid-market — and when it is not

Not every Proxmox environment needs Premium. An honest categorisation from a partner perspective:

Premium is now clearly the right choice for:

  • Production clusters with SLA commitments to internal departments or external customers
  • Setups where total outage directly translates into revenue loss (e-commerce, manufacturing, call centres)
  • Environments with multiple distributed clusters under Proxmox Datacenter Manager
  • PBS setups with critical backup responsibility and RTO/RPO commitments
  • Projects in regulated industries (NIS2, DORA, KRITIS)

Standard or Basic is usually enough for:

  • Test and development environments
  • Hyper-converged clusters with redundant nodes where a single-node failure is automatically compensated anyway
  • Configurations where the local IT partner already has Premium with the vendor and covers that indirectly
  • Environments with predictable maintenance windows and weekday-only use

The price difference between Standard and Premium per year and socket is modest. The decisive factor is not the price but the answer to a single question: what does one hour of production outage at night cost in comparison? If the answer is four figures or higher, Premium pays off in the first incident.

What this means for working with DATAZONE

As an authorised Proxmox partner our role stays consistent — and becomes more useful with the new 24/7 support, not less. We are the first point of contact who knows the environment, has the hardware on site and runs the standard diagnosis. For cases that need vendor-deep analysis, we pull in Proxmox — from today also at night and on weekends.

In practice for our customers:

  • For DATAZONE customers with Proxmox Premium Subscription, P1 cases outside business hours are now escalated in parallel: to us as DATAZONE on-call and directly to Proxmox at the same time. That measurably shortens time to recovery.
  • For DATAZONE customers with Standard Subscription, we recommend the upgrade to Premium for clusters that fall under the criteria above. We are happy to run the business case — this is one of the topics we raise regularly during the annual infrastructure review.
  • For new customers, Premium is from today our standard recommendation for production setups, no longer just an option.

Working between vendor support and local partner is always a two-level affair in enterprise infrastructure. The 24/7 extension closes the gap on the vendor side. The partner side we continue to cover, in the same way our TrueNAS Enterprise customers know from the DATAZONE storage support page.

FAQ

When does the 24/7 extension take effect?

From today, 19 October 2026. The change is effective with the official announcement from Vienna and applies immediately to all existing and new Premium subscriptions.

Do I need to update my subscription or sign an addendum?

No. Existing Premium subscriptions are automatically rolled over to 24/7. There is no price increase, no additional contract clause and no addendum.

What does Severity 1 mean in the Proxmox context?

Severity 1 are critical cases where the productive environment is fully or largely down and no practical workaround exists. Examples: full cluster partitioning, PBS total outage with risk of backup loss, PDM central management unreachable during critical migrations.

What is the difference between Standard and Premium?

Standard offers first response during business hours with a quota of tickets. Premium now offers 24/7 first response in two hours for Severity 1, unlimited tickets and highest queue priority. Both include access to the Enterprise repository.

Does the 24/7 extension also apply to Proxmox Backup Server and Datacenter Manager?

Yes. The extension applies to all Premium subscriptions in the Proxmox portfolio: Virtual Environment, Backup Server and Datacenter Manager.

Does Proxmox now also take on hardware support or on-site visits?

No. Proxmox delivers vendor software support remotely. Hardware RMA runs through the hardware vendor; on-site visits are handled by the local IT partner — in our case DATAZONE as authorised partner with TrueNAS Enterprise support experience.

How does the collaboration between DATAZONE and Proxmox Premium work in a real incident?

For customers with Premium, in a P1 case we open a ticket at Proxmox in parallel and start our own diagnosis at the same time. That shortens time to recovery because work is not sequential. For Standard customers we go the own-diagnosis-first path in a P1 case, which usually takes more time.

Is the Premium upgrade worth it for me?

Rule of thumb: if one hour of production outage at night or on the weekend costs you four figures or more, Premium pays off in the first incident. For the concrete assessment, let us talk via the contact page — we run the business case transparently.
