TrueNAS V140: Enterprise HA storage for backup, file and DR

The smaller sibling of the V-Series — same platform, same software, same dual-controller HA as the V160. Positioned for backup, file services, secondary site and DR, with a later upgrade path to the V160 via controller swap and no data migration.

When the V140 is the right pick

The V140 is the smaller sibling of the V160 — same platform, same software, same dual-controller HA. iXsystems positions it as "an HA appliance for workloads where 15 GB/s and 192 GB RAM per controller are enough":

  • Backup and Veeam targets with Immutability
  • Central file services (SMB, NFS, FC)
  • Dev/test and secondary storage
  • DR / secondary site as a replication target of an M- or V160-primary
  • Consolidation of legacy NAS/SAN arrays onto an HA platform
  • Racks with tight power or space budget (≈ 600 W avg)

When to go for the V160 instead

iXsystems explicitly recommends the V160 for IO-heavy workloads: dense virtualization with many VMs, 4K/8K media, AI/ML training pipelines and databases that need more than 15 GB/s or 2× 400 GbE. The V160 brings twice the cache, 2–4× the bandwidth and up to four times the network fabric.

Quick decision

  • • Target workload backup / file / DR → V140.
  • • Primary VM workloads up to ~15 GB/s → V140 often sufficient.
  • • AI/ML, dense virtualization, 4K/8K → V160.
  • • Unsure? Start with the V140; the V140 → V160 upgrade path stays open.

Upgrade to V160 with no data migration

Chassis and backplane are shared across the V-Series. Per the iXsystems blog for the V140, the two controllers of a V140 can be swapped for V160 controllers one after the other while the system is running. Pools, datasets and shares stay in place; the HA peer handles failover during the swap. A new chassis, a second system or a classic replicate-and-switchover migration is not required.

  1. DATAZONE audits the current config (pools, networking, Veeam / hypervisor integration).
  2. Plan the maintenance window; V160 controllers are staged in advance.
  3. Controller A → V160. HA failover to controller B.
  4. Controller B → V160. Fail back, health check, acceptance.
  5. Lift network uplinks from 100 GbE to 200/400 GbE (optional).

Veeam Ready — Repository and All-in-One with Immutability

The V-Series carries two entries in the Veeam catalog. Both list the V140 as the test unit with TrueNAS Enterprise 25.10 and VBR 13.

Veeam Ready Repository

Primary Target, SMB

TrueNAS as a classic backup repository. The Veeam backup server stays separate; the V140 holds the backup datasets over SMB. Listed with Veeam since 30 July 2026 for VBR 13.

Veeam Ready All-in-One (virtualized)

Appliance + Immutability

The Veeam Software Appliance (VSA) runs as a VM directly on the V140. Backup server and storage share one box; Immutability is provided by the underlying TrueNAS dataset. Listed with Veeam since 1 September 2026 for VBR 13.

Note: object backups ("Object Repository") are not covered by the VSA — a classic Windows VBR remains required for that. Source: truenas.com/open-storage-for-veeam/. Immutability setup documented at docs/solutions/integrations/veeamimmutability.

V140 — frequently asked questions

Who is the TrueNAS V140 for?
The V140 is positioned by iXsystems for file services, backup and archive, secondary storage, dev/test, DR / secondary-site, racks with tight power or space budgets, and consolidation of older arrays. For IO-heavy workloads (AI, dense virtualization, 4K/8K media) iXsystems explicitly recommends the V160. Source: truenas.com/blog/introducing-the-truenas-v140/.
How is the V140 different from the V160?
Chassis, backplane, dual-controller HA and the 24+4 tri-mode bays are identical. The V140 ships with 16-core EPYC controllers, 192 GB RAM per controller, 12 TB NVMe read cache, 15 GB/s bandwidth and 4× 100 GbE. The V160 has 32-core EPYC controllers, 384–768 GB RAM, 24 TB cache, 30 GB/s bandwidth and up to 2× 400 GbE. Source: V-Series Data Sheet September 2026.
Can a V140 later become a V160?
Yes. According to the iXsystems blog post for the V140, both controllers of a V140 can be replaced one after the other while the system is running. Chassis, disks, pools and data stay in place; no classic data migration is required.
Is the V140 Veeam-certified?
Yes. The V-Series is listed in the Veeam catalog in two categories: "Veeam Ready Repository" (listed since 30 July 2026, test unit V140 with VBR 13) and "Veeam Ready All-in-One (virtualized)" with Immutability (listed since 1 September 2026, test unit V140 running TrueNAS Enterprise 25.10 with VBR 13). Sources: veeam.com/sys2511 and veeam.com/sys2795.
What does "All-in-One" mean here?
The Veeam Software Appliance (VSA) runs as a VM directly on the TrueNAS; backup server and storage target live on the same device, no separate Windows VBR server required. Object Repository is not supported by the VSA — for object-based backups a classic Windows VBR remains necessary. Source: truenas.com/open-storage-for-veeam/.
Which licenses are included?
Per the iXsystems V160 blog, TrueNAS Enterprise includes all protocols and features — SMB, NFS, iSCSI, FC, NVMe-oF, S3 with Object Lock, replication, Immutability, snapshots. No per-TB licensing. Lifecycle 7 years. Software: TrueNAS Enterprise 25.10.
Which HDDs and NVMes are supported?
Enterprise Nearline SAS HDDs at 7200 RPM in 8 to 30 TB (SED / FIPS 140 optional), NVMe SSDs from 3.8 to 122.8 TB (Gen4 in front bays, Gen5 in rear cache bays). Source: V-Series Data Sheet September 2026.
